    Analysis and insights into the changes of traditional Chinese medicine review and approval from 2020 to 2024

    The official release of the “Drug Registration Management Measures” in January 2020 marked a new milestone in the  classification management of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) registration, ushering in a new era for the registration and  application of innovative TCM drugs. This article provides a detailed analysis of the approval status of innovative TCM drugs,  improved new drugs, and ancient classic prescription compound preparations from 2020 to 2024, revealing the significant  achievements made in the inheritance and innovation of TCM in China. The study found that the number of New Drug  Applications (NDAs) and Investigational New Drug Applications (INDs) have increased annually, with a particularly notable  surge in the submission of applications for classic prescription compound preparations. The approval rates for innovative  TCM drugs and improved new drugs have significantly increased, along with the streamlining of review and approval process,  leading to shorter development cycles and reduced costs. Key findings include: (1) Enterprises demonstrate strong enthusiasm  for the research and development of innovative and improved TCM drugs, actively engaging in various types of drug R&D and  submissions; (2) Classic prescription compound preparations have become a focal point for enterprises due to their shorter  development cycles and lower costs; (3) Improvement to the “three-combined” evidence system has accelerated the R&D process  by incorporating real-world data. Through this study, we aim to provide valuable insights for TCM R&D enterprises and  policymakers, promoting the sustained prosperity and development of the TCM sector.

    The protection system for traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) varieties, as an important policy tool to promote the development  of TCM, has a long history of over 30 years, from the promulgation of the “Regulations on the Protection of Traditional Chinese  Medicine Varieties” in 1992 to the comprehensive revision of the draft for soliciting opinions in 2022. The TCM protection system  evolves to meet the needs of innovative development of TCM. This paper reviews the policy developments in TCM varieties  protection, collates protection data (1993 to 2024), and analyzes enterprises application strategies amid impending regulatory  changes.

    Scutellaria baicalensis (S. baicalensis) is a heat-clearing and moisture-drying medicine, which is used to treat diseases such as  warm fever, upper respiratory tract infection, lung heat cough, moist heat jaundice, pneumonia, dysentery, hemoptysis, red  eyes, restless fetus, hypertension, abscess, swelling and boils. In recent years, with the in-depth study of its chemical composition  and pharmacological activity, it was found that the clinical antibacterial activity of S. baicalensis was significant, and it did not produce drug resistance. The chemical constituents and pharmacological effects of S. baicalensis were reviewed in this paper. This review can provide reference for further development and utilization of medicinal value of S. baicalensis.

    Croton crassifolius (C. crassifolius) is a kind of traditional Chinese medicine, with a history hundreds of years in China. By consulting Sciencedirect databases and Web of Science databases, 68 related articles were found, 12 of which were related to chemical composition and pharmacological activity. It was used by the ancients as the medicine to treat stomach trouble, rheumatism, poliomyelitis and injuries, and it is the treasure of traditional Chinese medicine in China. With the development of  modern medicine, the active ingredients and therapeutic mechanism of C. crassifolius have been gradually revealed. In this study, the functions and applications of C. crassifolius were reviewed from the aspects of botany, traditional Chinese medicine therapy and biotransformation of substances, so as to better understand and use C. crassifolius and provide more effective drug choices for clinical treatment.

    This study reviews the hepatotoxic chemicals, mechanisms of toxicity, and detoxification methods of Toosendan Fructus (TF). Limonin-type triterpenoids, as primary hepatotoxic components, mediate toxicity though inflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, ferroptosis, and apoptosis. Hepatotoxicity can be mitigated by controlling dosage, using processed forms of the herbs, and through rational herbal compatibility. The review provides insights for enhancing the safety and clinical application of TF.

    KangBingDuKouFuYe (KBDKFY) is widely used to treat inffuenza, upper respiratory tract infections, mumps and other diseases. Due to their diverse active ingredients, it is believed that they may have excellent anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral effects. Therefore, we believe they may have multiple therapeutic targets for throat inflammation caused by bacterial or viral infections. This study utilizes network pharmacology methods to analyze the therapeutic effects of KBDKFY on Bacterial Pharyngeal Tonsillitis and Viral Pharyngitis, aiming to identify its active ingredients, action targets and related pathways through molecular docking. Additionally, it determines the afffnity between the main active ingredient and the core target before conducting in vitro bacteriostatic tests. The analysis results show that KBDKFY contains multiple active ingredients and potential targets for treating Bacterial Pharyngeal Tonsillitis and Viral Pharyngitis. KEGG enrichment analysis indicates that KBDKFY may have therapeutic effects on these conditions through pathways such as pathways in cancer, Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus infection, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, and others. This provides a theoretical basis for further exploring pharmacological effects and clinical applications of KBDKFY.

    Analysis of plant resources and diversity in some areas of Inner Mongolia, China

    Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region is located in the north of China. The vast area and complex terrain of this region make it rich in plant resources. The 11th Shenyang Pharmaceutical University Chinese Medicine Resources Scientific Expedition Team investigated the plant resources and diversity in some areas of Inner Mongolia through field investigation, literature review and specimen identification. From July to August, 2017, 215 species of vascular plants belonging to 59 families and 160 genera were collected. The dominant families are RanunculaceaeLamiaceaeRosaceaeFabaceae and Asteraceae, with 11, 12, 15, 19, and 37 species, respectively. There are 55 families, 132 genera and 163 species of medical plant recources in some areas of Inner Mongolia. 27 vascular plants are Mongolian Medicine. In a word, our research has updated the plant recources and diversity in all areas of Inner Mongolia. Furthermore, this study provides practical and meaningful suggestions for strengthening the protection and utilization of plant resources in some areas of Inner Mongolia, which is of great significance for maintaining local plant diversity.

    Discovery of quality marker and study on its pharmacodynamic differences in antirheumatoid arthritis in the three original plants of Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma

    Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) technology was employed to analyze the chemical composition of three Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma sourced from different origins. Common characteristic components were identified through comprehensive literature review and the integration of fragment ion data. A rheumatoid arthritis (AA) model was induced in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats using Freund’s complete adjuvant, and simultaneous administration of extracts from the three original plants of Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma, along with different doses of magnoflorine, was conducted to evaluate differences in therapeutic efficacy. A common characteristic component was identified, magnoflorine, present in Clematis chinensis Osbeck. Clematis hexapetala Pall., and Clematis manshurica Rupr. Extracts from all three original plants, as well as each dose group of the Rhizomas of Clematis chinensis Osbeck. Clematis hexapetala Pall., Clematis manshurica Rupr., and magnoflorine, demonstrated efficacy in alleviating rheumatoid arthritis symptoms by enhancing cellular infiltration, reducing vascular opacification, and lowering serum levels of inflammatory factors. Magnoflorine has the potential to be used as a quality marker for the three original plants of Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma. Additionally, both the three original plants and magnoflorine exhibit therapeutic potential for rheumatoid arthritis, which provides a solid theoretical and experimental basis for the establishment of more scientifically grounded quality standards of Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma and promotes the rational utilization of medicinal resources.

    Comprehensive analysis of phenolic composition and antioxidant mechanisms in Gymnema sylvestre extracts using LC-MS and column chromatography

    Recent studies have highlighted the potential of plant extracts as therapeutic agents for managing oxidative stress and related  disorders. This study aims to elucidate the phenolic composition and antioxidant properties of Gymnema sylvestre extracts.  Ethanolic reflux extraction followed by column chromatography was employed to isolate phenolic compounds. The total phenolic  and flavonoid contents were quantified using the Folin–Ciocalteu and aluminum chloride colorimetric methods, respectively.  Antioxidant activities were assessed by DPPH, ABTS scavenging assays and the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay.  High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with a C18 column and Thermo TSQ Quantum Access Max (LC-MS) were  used to determine the levels of gymnemic acid and identify other potential phenolic compounds. The analysis revealed significant  antioxidant activities in the fractions. Fraction A showed the highest DPPH and ABTS scavenging activities, and Fraction C  demonstrated the highest ferric reducing power. LC-MS analysis identified several phenolic compounds, indicating that these  are major contributors to the antioxidant efficacy of the extract. This study provides a detailed phenolic profile and confirms the  strong antioxidant potential of Gymnema sylvestre leaf extract, supporting its therapeutic use and further investigation.

    The dried fruit of Forsythia suspensa (Oleaceae), also known as Forsythia, is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb known for its  heat-clearing and detoxifying properties. It is used to disperse nodules, reduce swelling, remove toxins, clear heat, and alleviate  wind-heat syndromes. It also has hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, anticancer, antioxidant, anti-aging, and anti-obesity effects, as well as potential therapeutic effects on Alzheimer’s disease and diabetic nephropathy. It is used  to treat scrofula, mastitis, wind-heat common cold, and other ailments. The review summarizes the chemical constituents and  pharmacological effects of F. suspensa, aiming to provide a scientific foundation for its future development, research, and clinical  utilization.

    Plant diseases affect the cultivation of Chinese herbal medicines, while traditional chemical pesticides have many drawbacks such  as environmental pollution, health risks and disruption of ecological balance. Microbiocontrol has gradually appeared in public  view, and its application has become increasingly extensive. This paper reviews the disease-causing species of medicinal plants,  including fungal, bacterial, nematode, viral and parasitic pests, and reviews the diseases caused by microorganisms in traditional  Chinese medicine planting and their biological control by consulting Sciencedirect databases and Web of Science databases.  4667 related articles were found, of which 552 were related to microbiocontrol technology and cultivation of traditional Chinese  medicines. This review provides a reference for the green planting technology of traditional Chinese medicine.

    Thrombosis is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in patients suffering from polycythemia vera (PV). Drug pair Salviae  Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Danshen, DS) and Notoginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Sanqi, SQ) is common traditional Chinese  medicine (TCM) used in clinical practice to promote blood circulation and eliminate blood stasis. In this study, network  pharmacology and molecular docking were used to analyze the potentially active ingredients and underlying mechanisms of drug  pair DS-SQ against thrombosis after PV. These results show that 54 targets are related to both disease and the drug pair. Nineteen  core targets, including IL-6 and AKT1, were screened. Luteolin and tanshinone IIa from DS as well as quercetin from SQ might  be the major substances in the treatment of thrombosis after PV. KEGG enrichment analysis demonstrated that the lipid and  atherosclerosis signaling pathway might play a significant role. These results provide valuable insights and a reference for the use of  drug pair DS-SQ in management of thrombosis after PV and lay a foundation for further exploration of pharmacological effects.

    Tuberculosis, an infectious disease, causes considerable morbidity and mortality. Within the host immune system, transition  metals play vital roles in combating Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), acting as catalytic cofactors, mediating electron  transport, and catalyzing antimicrobial radical formation. Both the host and MTB have developed mechanisms to maintain  metal homeostasis. Flavonoids, important herbal materials with potent iron-chelating ability, have gained attention for their  antitubercular and anti-inflammatory effects, making them a promising treatment option. This review explores how trace  metals restrict MTB and the dynamic balance between pathogen and host, revealing innovative perspectives for therapeutic  interventions.

    Analysis of wild medicinal vascular plant resources and diversity in Dabie Mountains, Anhui Province

    Dabie Mountains are located at the junction of Anhui, Henan and Hubei provinces in the East of China. With its varied altitude,  climate, and soil texture, Dabie Mountains are extremely rich in wild plant resources. The 12th Traditional Chinese Medicine  (TCM) Resources Scientific Expedition Team of Shenyang Pharmaceutical University conducted a study on wild vascular plants  resources, especially medicinal vascular plants, through field investigation, literature review and specimen identification. There  were 472 species of vascular plants belonging to 347 genera and 125 families collected during July 2018 in this area, of which 424  species were medicinal vascular plants, accounting for 89.83% of the total. From the perspective of medicinal parts, most of the  medicinal plants there have values in their roots and rhizomes, as well as the whole plants. The efficacy and characteristics of  these pharmaceutical dimensions were also summarized and analyzed in detail. Besides, among the wild vascular plants collected,  the most dominant families with the biggest numbers of species are Compositae, Lamiaceae, Liliaceae, Rosaceae, Leguminosae,  Ranunculaceae, Saxifragaceae and Polygonaceae, and the dominant genus are Viola and Sedum. In terms of life form, perennial  herbs are dominant, accounting for 55.72% of the total species, followed by some annual (or biennial) herbs, shrubs and lianas.  Finally, recommendations are put forward for strengthening the protection and utilization of wild medicinal plant resources in Dabie Mountains.

    This study established a simple, rapid, and accurate nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) quantitative method to determine the cefpodoxime proxetil content in raw materials and dry suspensions, and evaluated the uncertainty. The relative content of cefpodoxime proxetil iso-A and iso-B was also analyzed based on 1 H NMR. In this study, an internal standard method was used, with DMSO-d 6 as the solvent and maleic acid and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene as internal standards, to calculate the concentration of the samples. Quantitative analysis was performed using both the traditional quantitative NMR (traditional qNMR) and the quantitative Global Spectral Deconvolution (qGSD) method. The linearity range, quantitation limit, precision, robustness, and accuracy of these quantitative analysis methods were validated. The results indicated that both internal standards and integration methods met the requirements of the “9101 Guidelines for Analytical Method Validation” in the 2020 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Compared to the traditional qNMR, qGSD has unique advantages in accurate quantitative analysis in complex systems. By using the combined HPLC-SPE-NMR technique, cefpodoxime proxetil iso-A and iso-B were enriched and analyzed, and their NMR data were accurately assigned. The quantitative analysis results were in line with the requirements of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia.

    Houttuynia cordata is an important traditional Chinese medicine. It is widely used for clearing heat and detoxification, reducing  swelling and treating sores, diuresis and dehumidification. It is also used to treat lung carbuncles, ulcers, hemorrhoids,  rectal bleeding, spleen and stomach heat, which are caused by excess heat, heat toxicity, dampness, and disease heat. Modern  pharmacological experiments have shown that H. cordata has antibacterial, antiviral, immune enhancing, diuretic and other  effects. This article reviews the chemical components and biological activities of H. cordata to provide reference for clinical  application.

    Exploring the molecular mechanism of Corydalis yanhusuo against prostate cancer based on network pharmacology and molecular docking validation

    The molecular mechanism underlying Corydalis Yanhusuo’s therapeutic potential in prostate cancer (PCa) treatment was  elucidated using network pharmacology and molecular docking. Nineteen active ingredients, 399 drug targets, 1790 disease  targets and 143 intersection targets were identified. Ten core targets were screened from the protein-protein interaction network.  Enrichment analysis revealed 133 GO terms and 114 KEGG pathways. Corydalis Yanhusuo may potentially treat prostate cancer  through pathways such as the Rap1 signaling pathway, phospholipase D signaling pathway, Ras signaling pathway, VEGF  signaling pathway and JAK-STAT signaling pathway. Significant differences in expression were observed for EGFR, PDGFRA,  PIK3CA, PIK3CD, PIK3CG and PIK3R1. Molecular docking and dynamics simulation analysis showed low binding energy  between active components and the six core genes of Corydalis Yanhusuo, indicating a favorable docking effect. This study shows  that Corydalis Yanhusuo exhibits promise in prostate cancer treatment through a synergistic “multi-component-multi-targetmulti-pathway” effect.

    Liupan Mountains are situated in the south of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and east of Gansu Province. This area is rich in  forests and vegetation. After field investigation, literature review and specimen identification, the plant resources and diversity  of Liupan Mountains were studied by the 4th Shenyang Pharmaceutical University Chinese Medicine Resources Scientific  Expedition Team. There were 161 species of vascular plants belonging to 60 families and 119 genera collected from July to August  2010 in this area. Among them, the dominant families are Campanulaceae, Ranunculaceae, Orobanchaceae, Asparagaceae,  Fabaceae, Rosaceae and Asteraceae, with 6, 7, 8, 8, 10, 10, and 22 species, respectively. Although representing only 11.7% of the  total number of families, these families had a species occupancy rate of over 44.1%. At the genus level, Pedicularis is the most  dominant genus with 6 species, while 92 genera contain only 1 species, accounting for 77.3% of the total number of genera. In a  word, our research has updated the plant resources and diversity in Liupan Mountains. Furthermore, by providing practical and  meaningful suggestions for strengthening the protection and utilization of plant resources in Liupan Mountains, our research is  of great significance for maintaining the diverse ecosystem in this area.

    Mechanisms and preliminary validation of luteolin in the treatment of hyperuricemia based on network pharmacology and toxicology studies

    Hyperuricemia (HUA) refers to a condition where fasting serum uric acid levels exceed 420 μmol/L in men and 350 μmol/L in women, affecting 17.4% of China’s general population, showing increasing prevalence among younger individuals. Luteolin, a common flavonoid compound, exhibits multiple biological effects, including inhibition of tumor proliferation and inflammatory responses. It also suppresses the activity of urate transporter 1 (URAT1), promoting uric acid excretion. This study is the first to integrate network toxicology and network pharmacology approaches to systematically analyze the multi-target mechanisms of adenine-induced HUA and luteolin-treated HUA, with molecular docking validation of interaction targets. We constructed compound-pathway-intersection gene networks and a dual-group PPI network to analyze the mechanisms of adenine-induced HUA and luteolin-treated HUA. The dual-group PPI network identified 7 shared targets, namely XDH, PYGL, IL10, PPARG, TNF, VEGFA, and MAOA, involving core intersecting pathways such as purine-xanthine metabolism and insulin resistance. Luteolin may activate PPARG to regulate inflammation and uric acid excretion modules in the adenine network. GO-KEGG analysis indicates that intersection genes for adenine pathogenesis involve diverse biological processes, cellular components, and molecular functions, with core target KEGG analysis revealing 15 signaling pathways. Luteolin’s therapeutic targets are associated with more entries, and its core target KEGG analysis identified 46 signaling pathways. Molecular docking shows TNF, PPARG, and PYGL bind to both luteolin and adenine with negative binding energies, and luteolin’s binding energies are all below 5 kJ/mol, confirming stable binding. Luteolin’s anti-HUA mechanism is characterized by inhibition of production, promotion of excretion, anti-inflammation and metabolic regulation, but interactions with gut microbiota metabolites require further study.

    Phytochemical investigation of the branches of Viburnum awabuki K. Koch led to the isolation of thirteen known compounds, including five lignans (1-5), one phytosterol (6), two phenylpropanoids (7-8), one chromone derivative (9), three pentacyclic triterpenoids (10-12), and one glyceride (13). The structures of these compounds were elucidated through extensive spectroscopic analyses and comparison of experimental data with literature data. Additionally, the chemotaxonomic significance of the isolated secondary metabolites was also discussed.

    Sophorae Flavescentis Radix (Ku Shen) is a traditional Chinese medicine used to treat damp-heat syndrome-related diseases, such as  dysentery, jaundice, rhinitis, and skin inflammation. Recent studies have revealed the potential pharmacological value of its active  alkaloid components, matrine (MAT) and oxymatrine (OMT), in the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR). To develop a thermosensitive  in-situ gel containing MAT and OMT for the intranasal treatment of AR, a thermosensitive matrix composed of Pluronic F127/ F68 was optimized using the Box–Behnken Response Surface Methodology. The biosafety of the formulation was evaluated using  a palatal ciliary movement model. A guinea pig model of AR induced by ovalbumin and aluminum hydroxide was established.  Pharmacodynamic effects were comprehensively assessed through behavioral scoring, histopathological analysis (hematoxylin and  eosin) of nasal mucosa, and serum immunological markers (IgE, IL-4, and IFN-γ). The MAT-OMT in-situ gel showed no toxicity during  ciliary movement in the toad palatal ciliary motility model. The MAT-OMT combination significantly alleviated nasal itching, sneezing,  and rhinorrhea in guinea pigs with AR, mitigated mucosal edema and epithelial damage, and improved inflammatory cytokine levels,  suggesting its efficacy in correcting Th1/Th2 immune imbalance. The comprehensive therapeutic effect of MAT-OMT was significantly  superior to that of MAT or OMT alone and comparable to that of the positive control, budesonide.

    The combination of Daphnes Cortex (DC) and Liquorice Root (LR), two traditional Chinese medicinal herbs, has shown significant therapeutic effects on rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but its synergistic mechanism of action remains to be elucidated. Employing a network pharmacology and molecular docking approach, this study systematically investigated the synergistic mechanism of the herb pair DC and LR in RA treatment. Active components and their corresponding targets were retrieved from the TCMSP database and relevant literature, and RA-related targets were collected from established disease databases. A total of 73 overlapping targets between DC-LR and RA were identified, among which core targets such as AKT1, TNF, and CASP3 were highlighted. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses revealed that these targets are involved in biological processes such as oxidative stress response and cell migration, and are significantly enriched in key pathways including HIF-1, TNF, and PI3K-Akt signaling pathways. Compatibility analysis further revealed that the combination of DC and LR may enhance therapeutic effects through synergistic regulation of shared targets and complementary modulation of upstream and downstream pathway components. Molecular docking confirmed strong binding affinities between core active components and key targets. This study provides a multi-dimensional “component-target-pathway” perspective on the potential synergistic anti-RA mechanism of the DC-LR herb pair, offering a theoretical basis for further experimental validation and clinical application.

The molecular identification techniques in recent years were analyzed and summarized in this paper, such as RAPD, ISSR, RFLP, AFLP, SNP, and DNA bar code sequence analysis techniques. By consulting Sciencedirect databases and Web of Science databases, 2348 related articles were found, of which 39 were related to molecular identification techniques and traditional Chinese medicine. The application of the molecular identification techniques in four aspects was reviewed, namely the identification on the authenticity (true or false), multi-source identification and genetic diversity, producing area, and growing year discrimination of traditional Chinese medicine.

    Metabonomics, a key aspect of systems biology, offers novel approaches for early diagnosis, pharmacotherapy, and health management in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). This paper summarizes its applications in establishing TCM quality standards, exploring material basis, clarifying mechanism, and assessing toxicity. By profiling TCM and its metabolites, metabonomics comprehensively captures chemical traits, enhancing quality evaluation precision. It also tracks metabolic  dynamics to understand TCM’s absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, thereby facilitating the identification of active components and their underlying mechanisms. In toxicity assessment, metabonomics uncovers hepatic and renal toxicity while  elucidating potential mechanisms. In summary, metabonomics fosters TCM modernization and globalization, serving as a pivotal tool for advancing research and development.

    In order to reveal the multi-target pharmacological mechanism of Zedoary turmeric oil combined with docetaxel in the treatment of breast cancer, we used network pharmacology and molecular docking. The targets of docetaxel were retrieved from the Swiss Target Prediction database. The active components of Curcuma Zedoary turmeric were screened using the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform (TCMSP), with criteria set as oral bioavailability OB ≥ 30% and drug-likeness DL ≥ 0.1. Potential targets of these components were subsequently predicted. Breast cancer-related targets were retrieved from the OMIM and GeneCards databases. The Venny tool was used to identify 177 overlapping targets between docetaxel, Zedoary turmeric oil, and breast cancer, followed by protein-protein interaction (PPI) analysis. Gene Ontology (GO) functional enrichment and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses were performed using the Metascape database. A drug-breast cancer-KEGG pathway target network was constructed using Cytoscape 3.8.0. Molecular docking was employed to verify the binding ability between drugs and core targets. Results showed that the combined treatment may exert anti-breast cancer effects through key targets such as MAPK1, PIK3CA, and HSP90AA1, primarily implicating the biological process of protein phosphorylation and engaging the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway. This study successfully predicted the key targets and enriched pathways of Zedoary turmeric oil combined with docetaxel for breast cancer treatment, providing new insights for further research and development.

    Hepatoma, one of the most common fatal malignant tumors, exhibits a rising global incidence, especially in developing countries. In recent years, traditional Chinese medicine has played an increasingly significant role in hepatoma treatment. Glycyrrhiza uralensis (G. uralensis), a perennial herb in the legume family, is also known as G. uralensis, sweet root, sweet grass, and ancient Chinese grass. Its roots and rhizomes are used medicinally for their properties to nourish Qi, detoxify, and harmonized the effects of various compounds. This study selected “Glycyrrhiza”, “hepatoma”, and “pharmacological effect” as key search terms. From PubMed, a total of 2,947 articles were retrieved containing these keywords in either the abstract or title, among which 12 were relevant to Glycyrrhiza and hepatoma. Additionally, from the Wanfang database, 19,632 papers were retrieved with “Glycyrrhiza” in the abstract or title, among which 197 were related to Glycyrrhiza and hepatoma. This review focuses on the anti-hepatoma properties of Glycyrrhiza, providing a comprehensive overview of its common extracts, such as flavonoids, triterpenoids, and polysaccharides, and elaborating on their chemical structures, anti-hepatoma cancer mechanisms, and other pharmacological effects.

The active substances of herbal medicines have been classified and discussed based on their chemical properties, and the CE methods applied to different substances are summarized and discussed. This article also provides some suggestions for future research and improvement.

    Boenninghausenia sessilicarpa Lévl. is a commonly used folk medicine in southwest Yunnan. It has the effects of clearing heat  and detoxifying, promoting qi circulation and activating blood circulation. It is used to treat various conditions such as colds,  tonsillitis, mumps, lung-heat induced cough and asthma, abdominal distension and pain, pyelonephritis, gangrene of the  extremities, low back pain, and bruises from falls and injuries.     This study explored the therapeutic targets and molecular mechanisms of Huangqi Guizhi Decoction (HGD) in alleviating  pulmonary embolism (PE) by employing network pharmacology and molecular docking techniques. Firstly, the effective active  components of the Chinese herbs in HGD were retrieved from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database  (TCMSP), and their potential therapeutic targets were predicted using the Swiss Target Prediction platform. Subsequently, PErelated target genes were obtained from the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) database and GeneCards database.  Then, the Wei Sheng Xin tool was used to generate a Venn diagram for identifying the common targets between the herb-related  targets and PE-related targets. After screening these common targets, a “drug-component-target network” and a protein-protein  interaction (PPI) network were constructed. Furthermore, Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of  Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis were conducted on the intersecting targets, and molecular docking verification  was performed using AutoDockTools and PyMol software. Finally, 20 active components were screened from Astragali Radix, 7  from Cinnamomi Ramulus, 13 from Paeoniae Radix Alba, 5 from Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, and 29 from Jujubae Fructus, with  a total of 983 therapeutic targets. Among these targets, 134 were associated with PE, and protein kinase B1 (AKT1), mitogen-activated protein kinase 1 (MAPK1), and transformation-related protein 53 (TP53) served as the core targets. The results of GO  and KEGG enrichment analyses indicated that the alleviation of PE by HGD is mainly related to pathways including immune  response, regulation of gene expression, atherosclerosis, and tumorigenesis. Molecular docking results showed that the key  active components in HGD could bind to the core targets spontaneously and stably. This study revealed that HGD may alleviate  symptoms in PE patients by regulating signaling pathways, modulating platelet function to exert anticoagulant effects, and  regulating the expression of anti-inflammatory genes, which provided a direction for subsequent experimental research.

    Apium graveolens, an annual herb belonging to the family of Apiaceae, is widely distributed in North and South America,  Southern Europe, Africa and Asia. Apium graveolens seeds have a rich history in traditional Chinese medicine for treating  hypertension, headaches, vertigo and epilepsy. N-butylphthalide, originally extracted from Apium graveolens seeds, represents  a first-in-class drug developed independently in China. Its broad pharmacological activities on nervous system disorders have  garnered significant attention from researchers globally. This review focuses on the pharmacological research of n-butylphthalide  on central nervous system diseases, including ischemic stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and amyotrophic lateral  sclerosis. The purpose is to pave the way for future study on the mechanistic targets of n-butylphthalide.

    Network pharmacology to decipher the mechanism of Danggui  Longhui Wan against chronic myeloid leukemia

    Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a hematopoietic myeloproliferative disorder. The Chinese prescription Danggui Longhui  Wan (DGLHW) has been utilized in CML treatment, but its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we gathered 794 constituents, 1249 drug targets, 1654 disease genes and 129 intersection genes. GO and KEGG were used to analyze the  function of these genes. Compatibility of prescription study showed that monarch drug, minister drug, assistant and guide drug  played a synergistic role in the treatment of CML. In addition, we obtained 20 hub genes and 12 key components. Molecular  docking indicated that the main compounds and core proteins had good binding ability. The results of this study also showed that  DGLHW might play a role in the treatment of CML by affecting MAPK, PI3K/AKT, FoxO and p53 signaling pathways.

    This study explored the anti-breast cancer (BC) mechanism of Curcuma zedoaria (CZ) via the network pharmacology approach.  The active components of CZ were screened by oral bioavailability (OB) and drug-likeness (DL) criteria using the Traditional  Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform (TCMSP). The potential targets of CZ were predicted through TCMSP and SwissTargetPrediction, while BC-related target genes were screened via GeneCards and the Online  Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) database. The common target genes of CZ and BC were obtained by using the Venn tool.  The protein interaction network diagram was constructed by using String software. The network diagram of CZ components was  created by using Cytoscape 3.8.0. The intersection genes of drugs and diseases were analyzed by using the R language software for Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis. Finally, the  docking activity between the active ingredient and the key target was verified through molecular docking. Through the methods  of database search and literature mining, 23 bio-active components of CZ and 370 corresponding gene targets, 1776 disease  gene targets, and 132 drug-disease intersection genes were obtained. GO analysis revealed 67 types of cellular components, 113  molecular functions, and 2042 biological processes. KEGG analysis identified 138 enriched pathways. This study preliminarily elucidated the potential mechanism underlying the therapeutic effect of CZ on BC.

    Panax notoginseng (P. notoginseng), a valuable traditional Chinese medicine, is the dried root of plants in Acanthopanax  gracilistylus family, with the effect of dispersing blood stasis, eliminating swelling and relieving pain. With the development of  modern medicine, the active ingredients and mechanisms of P. notoginseng have been gradually revealed. The present paper  systematically reviews the chemical composition and biological activities of P. nologinseng, to provide a scientific basis and  reference for detailed research on P. nologinseng.

    Network pharmacology-based exploration of the synergistic efficacy and detoxification mechanisms of Tripterygium wilfordii and Epimedium brevicornum in treating rheumatoid arthritis

    Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease with limited therapeutic options. The herbal compatibility of Tripterygium wilfordii Hook. f. (Leigongteng, LGT) and Epimedium brevicornum Maxim. (Yinyanghuo, YYH), widely used in Traditional Chinese  Medicine, has shown promising efficacy in RA treatment, yet its synergistic mechanisms and hepatoprotective effects remain unclear.  In this study, we systematically investigated the therapeutic and hepatotoxicity-attenuating mechanisms of LGT-YYH using integrated  network pharmacology and molecular docking approaches. Bioactive compounds and corresponding targets from LGT and YYH were retrieved from the TCMSP database, while RA- and hepatotoxicity-related targets were collected from public databases and  microarray datasets. Protein-protein interaction networks, hub protein targets identification, and functional enrichment analyses  revealed that 65 LGT and 26 YYH bioactive compounds collectively interact with 527 RA-related targets, with hub targets including  PTPN11, SRC, EGFR, MAPK1, and MAPK8 central to the therapeutic network. KEGG enrichment highlighted the MAPK signaling  pathway as a key mechanism of anti-RA activity. Furthermore, 243 targets were associated with LGT-induced hepatotoxicity, and YYH  components, particularly icariin, kaempferol, and epimedin B, exhibited binding to hepatotoxicity-related targets such as AKT1 and  ESR1, suggesting a hepatoprotective role via the AKT1-ESR1-Nrf2 axis. These findings indicate that LGT-YYH exerts synergistic anti-RA effects by modulating MAPK-related signaling while YYH components may mitigate LGT-induced hepatotoxicity, exemplifying the  TCM principle of enhancing therapeutic efficacy while reducing toxicity.
