Abstract: Boswellia serrata extract (BSE) has been used in traditional medicine for the treatment of inflammatory diseases since antiquity.11- keto- β - boswellic acid (KBA) and 3- O- Acetyl- 11- keto- β- boswellic acid (AKBA) are the two major active ingredients inBSE. This study describes a simple and rapid HPLC method developed for quantification of KBA and AKBA in rat plasma afteradministration of BSE. Separation was performed on a YMC-Pack ODS-A column (150 mm × 4.6 mm, 5 μm) using a mobilephase composed of acetonitrile and aqueous 0.5% phosphoric acid pumped at a flow rate of 1.0 ml/min with gradient elution.Detection was performed at a wavelength of 250 nm and the operating temperature was maintained at 35°C. The lower limitsof quantification were 0.1296 μg/ml, 0.1373 μg/ml for KBA and AKBA , respectively, and the intra - and inter-day precision andaccuracy of analytes were well within acceptance criteria (15%). The mean extraction recoveries of the analytes and IS from ratplasma were all more than 85.0%. The validated method was successfully applied to determine the pharmacokinetic profiles ofthe analytes in rat plasma.
