Abstract: Diabetes mellitus is a common endocrine disease characterized by hyperglycemia which may lead to serious complications such as hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disease, neuropathy, retinopathy and nephropathy. In the present study, the antidiabetic effect of Shenmai granula (SMG), which is a compound recipe composed of extracts of genseng, Raidix Ophiopogonis and Radix Astragali, was investigated in rats with diabetes induced by streptozotocin (STZ). The data obtained from our experiments showed that, compared with the model group levels, serum glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin (GHb), triglyerides (TG) and total cholesterol (T-CHO) were reduced in diabetic rats treated with SMG, while the levels of insulin and serum nitride oxide (NO) were increased. Furthermore, histopathological examination also confirmed the antidiabetic effect of SMG. These results indicate that the antidiabetic effect of SMG is related to the stimulation of insulin secretion and an increasing in the level of serum NO.
